Linden Hills History Study Group


The Linden Hills History Study Group sponsors walking tours,
slide shows, field trips and lectures about the rich history of our
Southwest Minneapolis neighborhood.



All are welcome to attend. Events are published on this website,
the Linden Hills Neighborhood Council website (www.lindenhills.org)
and in the Linden Hills Line community newsletter.

Members receive postcard mailings announcing events.

Help put Linden Hills on the map!
Elizabeth Gales, architectural historian with the consulting firm Hess Roise and Joe Hoover, historian and web guru for the Minnesota Historical Society will demonstrate Placeography--a fun, easy-to-use wiki tool for local history.

History of Minnehaha Falls

Minnehaha Falls is arguably the most photographed site in Minnesota. From her extensive private collection of Minnehaha images, collector Karen Cooper will examine the historical record of the early developments at the falls from the 1850s through the 1890s.

Walking Tour of Lakewood Cemetery with historian Peter Sussman

Our tour will start in the inspiring Harry W. Jones-designed Byzantine-style chapel and continue through the park-like grounds. View monuments of those who helped shape the Lakes District and those who have lived in and near Linden Hills.

Tour of Gideon Pond House in Bloomington

Sign up soon--our private tour is limited to 30 participants. Send an email to info@lindenhillshistory.org to reserve your place.
Tour will be given by Jeff Williamson, descendant of Gideon Pond.
Meet at 10:15 for ice tea and cookies. Tour is at 11 AM.
Lunch (cost not included in tour) at MN Valley Country Club after tour.
$3 fee for members and non-members, payable on day of tour.

Walking Tour of Minnehaha Creek
with historian Tom Balcom


Walk the Tangletown and Lynnhurst neighborhoods and learn about the former Grand and Bryant Avenue streetcar lines, view the Washburn water tower and discuss its historic connections to the creek and the neighborhood. Explore Minnehaha Creek issues including vegetation, recreation, bridges, historic preservation and interpretation.

Our History Book

Down at the Lake – A Historical Portrait of Linden Hills and the Lake Harriet District
 is a soft-cover book that includes 116 pages of informative text, maps
and dozens of historic photos of the history that shaped our neighborhood.
The award-winning book was published by the Linden Hills History Study Group in 2001.
The book includes four walking tours that may also be downloaded (see below).

Join Us!
We invite you to become a member of the Linden Hills History Study Group.
Membership fees help cover printing and postage costs
for announcement postcards as well as occasional facility fees.

The $10 per household membership fee includes free admission (normally $3/person)
to most History Study Group events as well as event announcement postcards in the mail.
Some field trips to museums require an admission fee.
